although many patriotic holidays seem to be occasions where only the "greatest generation" is celebrated (i know Ryan...i'm right there with ya), ESPN did a pretty good job capturing some lesser known military athletes from korea, vietnam, the persian gulf, and afghanistan. it is amazing that many of the same guys who were successful on the field were respectable soldiers; i'm not sure that would be the case for many of today's athletes (can you imagine going to war with tank johnson, manny ramirez, or allen iverson?).

so, enjoy the pictures and more importantly, the perspective they provide for us as we enjoy athletics and acknowledge the sacrifice of life and limb many servicemen and women have given for our liberty.
